How to restore your Relai Bitcoin wallet

You hopefully have written down your 12 words (seed phrase) that the Relai app provides you under “BTC backup”. If you haven’t yet, do it now! ๐Ÿค“

It’s very important to have this backup, because in case you lose your phone, or it gets stolen, or it stops working, or it gets eaten by a shark, you want to be able to access your Bitcoin. These 12 words (seed phrase) are your keys to those Bitcoin, so keep them secure!

If you lose your phone, you have two main options:

  1. Download the Relai app again on to your new device. Just head to your Apple App Store or Google Play Store, search for Relai, and hit “download”. Open the app. After the three onboarding slides, you can choose between “start” and “restore”. You want to click on “restore”, then you can type in your 12 words (seed phrase) together with your IBAN (the one you used Relai with to buy Bitcoin). This is enough to restore your Relai Bitcoin wallet together with your whole transaction history, everything should look as it did before! ๐Ÿ‘

  2. Download the Electrum app on to your laptop or PC. Open it and follow these simple steps:

    • choose a name for your wallet, for example “Relai Bitcoin wallet”, then click “next”
    • select “standard wallet”, then click “next”
    • select “I already have a seed”, then click “next”
    • enter your seed (12 words you’ve written down from the Relai app), click “options” and tick “BIP39 seed”, then click “OK”
    • select “legacy (p2pkh)”, then click “next”
    • leave empty, then click “next”
    • go to “tools” -> “Electrum preferences -> Transactions -> untick “use change address”, then go back to your dashboard
    • you should see your whole transaction history and be able to send your BTC to wherever you want ๐Ÿ‘
